On August 15, 2010 members of the Shrewsbury Volunteer Fire Company went to Dover Township Fire Co. Station 9 for rope rescue training. This is part of the York County Advanced Technical Rescue team (YC ATR) training. YC ATR is comprised of the Shrewsbury, Dover Township, Yoe, and Hanover Fire Departments. They provide resources and nationaly certified personnel for technical rescue incidents in York and surrounding counties. Training along with the YC ATR team were members from Fredrick County, MD.
Once at Dover Twp fire company crews gathered and were given the scenario for today’s training. Deputy Chief Glenn Jansen advised we would simulate a person trapped in a simulated swift water situation. Crews would have to establish a rope rescue system to send a rescuer across the water and down to the victim. This system is called a rope high line system. Crews were then split and told to begin rescue operations.
During this training crews worked to set up rope lines, the ability to anchor the ropes without the use of trees or other natural objects, working with an incident command system, and preparing to send a rescuer across to the victim.
The scenario was completed and it was a good training day for all personnel. Crews critiqued the day’s activities and discussed different ways to do the rescue. All in all everyone gained more knowledge and the team was more prepared for the real deal if it occurred.
Thanks go out to the personnel from Fredrick County ATR that trained with us today and to Dover Township Station 9 for hosting the drill and feeding us.
