On April 16th at approximately 5:30pm the Shrewsbury Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched to a local gas station/truck stop for a reported fuel tanker on fire. Personnel from New Freedom, Maryland Line, Glen Rock and Stewartstown fire departments were also dispatched.
On arrival Shrewsbury Volunteers found an engine compartment fire on a tractor trailer. The fire was quickly extinguished however it was then discovered there is a running diesel fuel spill from the truck. Personnel made immediate steps to contain the active fuel spill from contaminating the parking lot and surrounding wetlands.
Several barriers were put in place by firefighters from all on scene fire departments using haz mat booms, clay absorbent, sand and dirt. The York County Haz Mat Team was dispatched to assist in containment and removal of the spill. While on the scene of this incident personnel had to contend with several severe storm cells that moved through the area. At one point responders took cover due to a tornado warning. After several hours of work the spilled fuel was placed in containment barrels and a haz mat cleanup crew arrived to clean up the materials used to hold the spill.
Shrewsbury Volunteers wishes to thank all participating emergency services units who assisted in this incident. We also wish to thank the Shrewsbury Auxiliary members who provided drinks and food for the responders.
