At approximately 4pm today Shrewsbury Volunteers were dispatched to assist the Eureka Fire Company (Stewartstown) with an accident with multiple injuries. The accident was reported to be head on. Shrewsbury Volunteers responded with Rescue 61 and Engine 61-1. Enroute updated information from York County Dispatch advised there were multiple patients with possible serious injuries.
Shrewsbury Volunteers arrived to discover a head-on accident on Mount Airy Road in Hopewell Township. Rescue 61 and Engine 61-1 personnel began triaging the patients, some lying on the roadway, while Chief 61 (Myers) assumed Command 54 until the arrival of Eureka Fire Company officers. Shrewsbury FD personnel began spinal immobilization of injured patients. Hazard control was begun as fluids from the damage vehicles were spilling onto the roadway. Command advised York County Dispatch we have 2 serious injuries and 2 moderate injuries. Advanced Life Support units were needed however the helicopter was not needed.
Stewartstown Fire Company units and personnel arrived and assisted in operations already in progress. EMS units from Eureka, Rose Fire Co., Glen Rock, Jacobus, and York Hospital Advanced Life Support arrived and took over patient care. Chief 54 (Walker) met with Chief Myers and command was transferred to the Stewartstown Fire Chief. Pennsylvania State Police arrived and handled the accident investigation.
EMS units transported the injured patients to York Hospital. Shrewsbury and Stewartstown FD personnel assisted Gordon's Towing with vehicle removal and clean up of the roadway. At approximately 4:55pm all units cleared the scene.
