Life Member Harold Shaffer

     

Life Member of the Shrewsbury Volunteer Fire Company Harold E. Shaffer, 75, died Monday, August 16, 2010, at his home. He was the husband of Doris L. (Heindel) Shaffer with who he celebrated a 45th on wedding anniversary October 31, 2009. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Mason Dixon Baptist Church, 713 Campbell Road, New Freedom, with the Rev. Terry Felton, officiating. Burial will be in Bowser's Church Cemetery, New Freedom. Viewings will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church. The Geiple Funeral Home, Inc. 53 Main St., Glen Rock, is in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Shaffer was born on May 27, 1935, in New Freedom, a son of the late Melvin D. and Mary E. (Sweitzer) Shaffer. He was a 1953 graduate of Susquehannock High School and graduated from Penn State with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He had owned and operated Shaffer's Sales and Service in Shrewsbury for over 60 years. Mr. Shaffer served on the Board of Directors of the former Glen Rock State Bank in Glen Rock, serving as the Chairman of the Board, until the bank merged with Peoples State Bank (Community Banks) in 2001 and continued to serve on the Board of Community Banks until 2007 when the bank merged with Susquehanna Bank. He was also active in the Shrewsbury Fire Company, for many years, serving as President, Treasurer, Chief Engineer and is a Life Member of the fire company. He attended Mason/Dixon Baptist Church, New Freedom and was a member of the Shrewsbury Church of the Brethren, until the church closed in 2005, where he was a custodian for 25 years, served as president of the Council and Superintendent of the Sunday School and taught the Adult Class of the Sunday School of the church. He also held membership in the Brethren Home Foundation, the Founders Club and the Heritage Club and Auxiliary at the Brethren Home Community at Cross Keys and was a member of Gideons International. Besides his wife he leaves, a niece, April A. Groft of Boyertown; two nephews, Todd A. Dise of Red Lion and Kirk R. Dise of Lancaster; and four greatnieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Lois A. Dise.
